Jagmeet Singh is a Canadian politician and the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). Born in Scarborough, Ontario in 1979, Singh grew up in a family of activists and lawyers who instilled in him a strong sense of social justice and community service. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Ontario and then went on to earn his Bachelor of Laws from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School.
Singh’s political career began in 2011 when he was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario, making him the first turban-wearing Sikh to hold such a position. In 2017, he made history again by becoming the first visible minority to be elected as the leader of a major federal party in Canada.
